What is guitarra bajo sexto?

Guitarra bajo sexto, also known as simply bajo sexto, is a type of acoustic guitar originating from Mexico. It is a 12-stringed instrument, with six strings tuned to the notes E, A, D, G, C and F#, respectively. The remaining six strings are tuned to the same notes, only an octave lower.

The bajo sexto is typically played for traditional Mexican music genres such as norteño, tejano and conjunto. Its deep, rich sound complements the accordion, drums and other instruments played in these styles.

The instrument is about twice the size of a regular guitar and is usually played by holding it upright against the chest and strumming with a plectrum, or pick. Some players also use their fingers or a combination of both techniques.

The bajo sexto has gained popularity outside of Mexico, particularly in the United States and among Mexican-American communities. It has even been incorporated into non-Mexican musical genres, including country and folk.
